Kids' reading log
Reading twenty minutes a day lifts vocabulary, comprehension, writing and even maths word-problem confidence. This log makes the habit visible: five minutes a day, a star per entry, one week per page.
How to use the log
- Same time daily: bedtime works for most families
- Child reads aloud to you, or you read aloud together
- Fill one row per day: book, minutes, one word they learned
- Seven rows filled = a small celebration of your choosing
What counts as reading
- Any book they chose (comics and annuals count)
- Audiobook with the book open alongside
- You reading aloud to them still fills the row
- Library trips replace the log one evening a week
Keep the ritual warm
- Never use reading time as a punishment
- Let them abandon a book they hate (after 20 pages)
- Re-reads count: familiarity builds confidence
- Ask one question about the story, not a quiz
Tutor tip: Reading volume is the quietest superpower in education: it lifts comprehension, writing and even maths word problems. Keep the log on the fridge where everyone can see the streak.
