The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is the credential Victorian students complete over the final years of secondary school, with study scores that feed ATAR university entry. A quick map for parents.
How the VCE is structured
Students select VCE studies (subjects) typically across Years 11 and 12, mixing sequences that interest them with any prerequisites their target courses require. Maths Methods, Specialist Maths, English and the sciences are common choices for competitive courses.
Study scores, the GAT and ATAR
Each VCE study receives a study score out of 50, combining school-based assessment and end-of-year exams, moderated against the General Achievement Test (GAT). Study scores then feed the ATAR calculation run by VTAC for university offers.
Where tutoring fits
VCE Maths Methods and Specialist Maths, Physics and Chemistry carry heavy exam weight, and weekly one-to-one support with past VCAA exams is the standard preparation pattern. Starting in Units 1 and 2 (Year 11) prevents Year 12 rescue work.
