What is the PSAT?

The PSAT (technically the PSAT/NMSQT) is the Digital SAT's younger sibling: the same format, slightly shorter, sat in October. It is both the best rehearsal for the SAT and the qualifying test for National Merit Scholarships.
What it is and who takes it
The PSAT runs in October in the Bluebook app, in the same adaptive format as the Digital SAT, scored 320-1520. Most students take it in October of junior year (some schools also offer it to sophomores), exactly when SAT preparation is ramping up.
The National Merit link
Junior-year PSAT scores (in the US) can qualify students for National Merit Scholarship recognition, which carries real money and real prestige at some universities. The qualifying thresholds vary by state, and only juniors count, so juniors should take it seriously while sophomores can treat it as pure rehearsal.
How it fits SAT preparation
Because the format is identical, the PSAT is the perfect mid-preparation checkpoint: it produces official data on your weak question types months before the real SAT. Our SAT programme uses PSAT results as the diagnostic when students take it.

No. Colleges never see PSAT scores; only National Merit Scholarship Corporation and (if you opt in) colleges recruiting through the search service receive them.
