What is the OSSLT?

The OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test) is the reading and writing test Ontario students take in Grade 10, and passing it is a graduation requirement.
What it involves
The OSSLT is computer-based and tests reading comprehension and writing: reading passages with multiple-choice and open-response questions, plus a short writing task. It measures whether students can read and write at the level needed for daily life after school.
What happens if a student does not pass
Students who are unsuccessful can retake it in a later administration or complete the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course, which also satisfies the requirement. Neither is a disaster, but passing first time avoids scheduling complications in senior years.
How students prepare
The EQAO website publishes the format and past-style materials. Practice focuses on reading short real-world texts, answering open-response questions with evidence, and writing a structured opinion piece. Reluctant readers benefit most from early practice rather than Grade 10 panic.
