What is tajweed?

Tajweed is the set of rules governing how the Quran is recited correctly: exactly how each letter is pronounced, and how they interact. It is the difference between reading the words and reciting them as revealed.
Why tajweed exists
The Quran was revealed with a precise recitation, transmitted orally with exactness across generations. Tajweed rules protect that precision: where each letter originates in the mouth and throat (makharij), how long sounds stretch (madd), and what happens when certain letters meet.
