Tafseer is the study and explanation of the Quran's meaning: what the verses say, their context, and how scholars have understood them. It is the step beyond recitation, from reading the words to understanding them.

Tafseer ranges from reading trusted translated commentaries verse by verse to structured courses with teachers covering context (when and why verses were revealed), language, and scholarly interpretation. Older children and teens typically begin with the meanings of the short surahs they have memorised.
