The SHSAT (Specialized High Schools Admissions Test) is the single exam that admits students to New York City's specialised high schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech. One test, one sitting, high stakes.
What it tests
Two sections: English Language Arts (revising/editing and reading comprehension) and Mathematics. The maths runs through algebra-heavy problem solving, and the ELA section tests close reading and editing skill rather than general knowledge.
How admissions work
Students rank their preferred specialised schools and sit the SHSAT in autumn (typically December for most applicants). Admission is by score and ranking against each school's cutoff, which varies every year. There is no other entry route at these schools, so the test is decisive.
