NMSQT stands for National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which is the PSAT's formal role: junior-year scores can qualify students for National Merit recognition and scholarships.
How qualification works
Students take the PSAT in October of junior year. The selection index (calculated from section scores) is compared against state-by-state cutoffs, and around the top 3-4% of scorers are named Commended or Semifinalist, with Semifinalists advancing through an application to Finalist status. Cutoffs differ significantly by state.
What it is worth
National Merit Finalist status carries scholarship funding and carries real weight with some universities, several of which offer strong merit packages to Finalists. For students near their state's cutoff, a focused push on the junior-year PSAT is one of the highest-return hours in the college process.
