What is NAPLAN?

NAPLAN is Australia's National Assessment Program: Literacy and Numeracy, taken every March by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Here is what it involves and what the results actually mean for your child.
What NAPLAN tests
Four areas: numeracy, reading, writing (a single prompt for all year levels in that year's cycle) and conventions of language (spelling, grammar, punctuation). Since moving fully online, the test is adaptive: questions adjust in difficulty based on the student's answers, so stronger students see harder questions rather than simply more of them.
When it runs and how results arrive
NAPLAN takes place in March each year. Results are reported against proficiency standards (needs support, developing, strong, exceeding) rather than a class ranking, and individual student reports reach families later in the year through the school.
Do the results matter?
NAPLAN is a snapshot, not a placement exam. Its real value is diagnostic: it shows whether your child is meeting literacy and numeracy standards at a checkpoint year, early enough to act. The habits built preparing for it (timed reading, clear writing, mental maths) carry into selective entry and senior school.
