Common Core is the set of K-12 learning standards most US states use for maths and English. It is why US maths homework looks different from how parents remember learning, and why tutors must know the standards rather than assume.
What it actually is
Common Core State Standards define what skills students should master at each grade, not which textbooks or methods schools must use. Most states adopted them (some with their own tweaks and renames), which is why families moving between many states still find familiar homework styles.
Why the methods look strange to parents
The standards emphasise number sense and multiple strategies: decomposing numbers, area models for multiplication, explaining reasoning. Parents who learned one standard algorithm often find these steps unfamiliar, but the goal is understanding before speed. Both skills eventually matter; the sequence is what changed.
