What is AP Calculus?

AP (Advanced Placement) courses are US college-level courses taught in high school, and AP Calculus is the flagship for maths-strong students. Here is what AB and BC mean and how the exam works.
AB vs BC
AP Calculus AB covers roughly a first college semester of calculus: limits, derivatives and integrals with applications. BC covers AB content plus extra units (parametric, polar, vector-valued functions and series) at a faster pace. BC is not harder maths so much as more of it, compressed.
How the exam works
The AP Calculus exam has two sections, multiple choice and free response (FRQ), each split into calculator and no-calculator parts. Scores run 1-5, and a 5 is the target for competitive applications. FRQs are graded against published rubrics, which is why practising FRQ writing is as important as knowing the calculus.
Where tutoring fits
Weekly support aligned to the school's unit calendar, FRQ practice marked against rubrics, and MCQ pacing drills are the standard pattern. Students aiming for a 5 typically start support early in the year, not in spring.

Should my child take AB or BC?＋
It depends on their maths track and workload. A diagnostic and a look at their current course performance settle it honestly; BC is a stronger signal but requires the pace.
Do colleges give credit for AP Calculus?＋
Many US colleges award credit or placement for scores of 4 or 5, but policies differ. Check each college's AP credit policy when building the list.
