Tutoring red flags: when to walk away

6 min read ยท updated 2026-08-31

Most tutors are genuine, but the tutoring market has almost no regulation, and scam patterns in parent groups have grown fast. These are the warning signs we would take seriously, from one tutoring company to parents we will never meet.

Money red flags

  • โœ“ Large upfront packages before any trial class or meeting
  • โœ“ Payment by gift cards, crypto or transfers to personal accounts with no invoice
  • โœ“ 'Assessment fees' charged by strangers before any lesson happens
  • โœ“ Refusal to provide any refund or re-match policy in writing

Identity red flags

  • โœ“ Refuses a short video call before starting (a real tutor will happily meet you)
  • โœ“ No verifiable identity, company registration or physical presence
  • โœ“ Qualifications that cannot be named specifically ('I studied teaching abroad')
  • โœ“ Pressure and urgency: 'only two slots left today', 'price goes up tomorrow'

Quality red flags

  • โœ“ Guaranteed grades or exam results (nobody honest can promise an outcome)
  • โœ“ Reviews that all sound identical or appeared within the same week
  • โœ“ No curriculum questions: a real specialist asks about exam board, school and gaps first
  • โœ“ No reporting: weeks pass with no feedback about how your child is doing

The verification habit

Before paying anyone: video meet the tutor, verify the company exists (registration, address, a working website), pay small first (one month, not six), and keep everything on documented channels rather than personal transfers. A legitimate tutoring company will pass every one of these checks without complaint, and that is exactly the point.

Many are genuine, but the platform has little vetting. Apply the full checklist: video meeting, small first payment, documented channels, and never gift cards or crypto.
