Study skills for teenagers

Schools teach content and assume study skills. Most teenagers were never explicitly taught how to plan revision, test themselves or manage focus. These six systems are what our tutors build first with new students.
1. Planning: the weekly list, not the vague intention
Effective students run a weekly list: subjects, topics, sessions, ticked off visibly. The list is built on Sunday for the week ahead, weighted toward the weakest subjects. Plans that live in a teenager's head evaporate by Wednesday.
2. Active recall: close the book
Rereading notes feels productive and tests poorly. The working method is retrieval: close the book and write everything remembered, then check against the source and fix the gaps. Flashcards, blank-page summaries and self-quizzing all implement the same principle.
3. Spacing: return to topics
Topics revisited after a day, then a week, then a month, stay learned. Cramming produces knowledge that evaporates by the next lesson. A simple rotation calendar fixes this mechanically.
4. Error logs: the honest diary
Every mistake in homework and past papers gets one line: topic, error type, redo date. Errors are the most personalised revision resource a student owns, and most teenagers have never kept one.
5. Notes built for use
Notes are for testing yourself later, not for copying. Summaries, diagrams and question-style notes work; verbatim transcription does not.
6. Focus management
Phone in another room, timed sessions, one subject per block. Focus is a trainable skill, and 30 focused minutes beats 90 distracted ones every time.
