How to build reading habits in kids

5 min read · updated 2026-09-01

Reading is the highest-leverage habit in a child's education: it lifts vocabulary, comprehension, writing and even maths word-problem performance. It is also the habit screens destroy first. Here is the rebuild, from our English tutors.

The five-minute rule

Do not start with twenty minutes of silent reading. Start with five minutes where you read aloud or they read to you, daily at a fixed time (bedtime works). Once five minutes is automatic, extend it. Habits scale; good intentions do not.

Let them choose the books

A child who chooses comics or football annuals is a child who is reading. Choice is what makes the habit survive; the literary quality can come later from the school and from you suggesting 'one you might like'. Forcing worthy books is the fastest way to kill the habit you are building.

Read aloud, even to older children

Reading aloud to children beyond the age they can read themselves exposes them to vocabulary and sentence structures above their own level, and it keeps the ritual warm. Even ten minutes of a shared novel at bedtime does measurable work.

Why this lifts every subject

Reading builds the vocabulary that comprehension papers test, the background knowledge that makes new topics learnable, and the stamina that long exam papers demand. Our English tutors can tell within minutes which children read at home, and our maths tutors notice it too in word-problem confidence.

FAQs

Are audiobooks cheating?

No. Audiobooks build vocabulary and story love; pairing the audio with the physical book works especially well for reluctant readers.

My child only reads one type of book. Should I worry?

No. Series and repeat genres are how habits form. Breadth comes later, and a reader of anything eventually samples everything.
