Families relocating between New South Wales and Victoria ask this constantly. Both credentials lead to university entry, but their assessment styles differ, and the right preparation plan depends on which one your child will sit.
Structure
The HSC (NSW) runs across Years 11 and 12 with English as the only compulsory subject and external exams set by NESA. The VCE (Victoria) also spans two years with no compulsory subjects, letting students build a program from a wide catalogue, with the GAT sat by all VCE students.
Assessment and ATAR
HSC results combine school-based assessment with external exams, and Victorian VCE study scores combine school assessment with end-of-year exams moderated against the GAT. Both convert into an ATAR for university entry, calculated by the state's admissions centre.
Moving between NSW and Victoria
Interstate moves are manageable if timed well: the biggest risk is arriving mid-Year 12 with a different assessment structure. Bring your child's recent reports and results, and the new school and tutors can map subjects across. Choose subject continuity where possible, especially in maths sequences.
