How many tutoring sessions per week?

5 min read · updated 2026-09-01

One of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is: it depends on the goal and the gap. But there are reliable patterns across hundreds of students, and clear signs you have crossed into too much.

The standard: one session per week

For steady grade improvement with school, one focused 60-minute session weekly is the norm, and it works when the student does the set practice between sessions. This is the rhythm behind most of our converted families, and it is sustainable for years.

When two sessions a week earns its keep

  • Exam rescue: mocks more than a grade below target, or a resit date approaching
  • Two subjects both needing support in the same term
  • Entrance tests with fixed dates (11+, Selective, SHSAT) where pacing practice matters
  • Rebuilding after a bad patch: temporarily heavier, then stepping down once back on track

When more is actually worse

Three or more weekly sessions with a tired child produces diminishing or negative returns: no practice between sessions means no consolidation, and resentment builds. If a child needs that much contact, the issue is usually foundations or study habits, not hours, and the tutor should say so honestly.

The honest test: two markers

Progress markers: school marks or mock scores moving within a term, and homework resistance falling. Overload markers: dread before sessions and no independence between them. If you see overload markers, step down a session and rebuild; consistency over years beats intensity over months.

FAQs

Is one session a week really enough?

For most goals yes: research on regular tuition is based on weekly patterns. Two sessions suit exam push periods; beyond that, additional hours rarely add value without consolidation time.

Can we do longer sessions instead of more of them?

Focus drops sharply after an hour for most school-age children. Two 60-minute sessions beat one 120-minute marathon almost every time.
