Growth mindset became a poster on classroom walls and lost some credibility along the way. But the underlying research is real: what children believe about ability changes how they respond to struggle. Here is the practical version for maths at home.
The research, honestly stated
Studies popularised by Jo Boaler and colleagues found that students taught that the brain grows with effort (and that mistakes are part of learning) improved in maths compared to peers who believed ability is fixed. Effects are real but modest, and they work through behaviour: what the child does when a problem gets hard.
The phrases that change behaviour
- ✓ Replace 'I'm bad at maths' with 'I haven't learned this bit yet'
- ✓ Praise the strategy and the persistence, not being clever
- ✓ Normalise mistakes: mark work together and treat errors as information
- ✓ Let the child struggle productively before helping, then help with a question, not the answer
What parents should avoid
Saying 'I was never a maths person either' (children inherit that identity in one sentence). Comparing siblings. And rescuing too fast: jumping in at the first sigh teaches the child that struggle means stop. The productive struggle window is a few minutes, with a question as the scaffold.
