GCSE vs IGCSE

Both are Level 2 qualifications taken around age 16, both are recognised by sixth forms and universities, and the subject content overlaps heavily. The differences that matter are assessment style, exam sittings and where your child is sitting them.
Assessment style
UK GCSEs are almost entirely exam-based now, but IGCSEs took that approach earlier and lean on final exams even more heavily, with less coursework and fewer controlled assessments. For students who perform well in exams, that is an advantage; for students whose strength is sustained project work, it is worth noting.
Exam sittings and availability
GCSEs run mainly in May/June with a November resit window for maths and English. IGCSEs offer multiple sittings per year (Cambridge runs June and November, Edexcel International runs January and June in most subjects), which suits international school calendars and resit planning.
Which should your child take?
Usually they do not choose: the school picks the qualification. The practical question is which specification your child is enrolled in, because that decides which past papers to practise. Tell us the syllabus code when you book and sessions follow it exactly.

It is manageable: British-curriculum schools in the Gulf commonly run the same Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE specifications, and tutors can bridge the remaining content.
